Are you a fan of the sound effects used in the horror genre?

I myself find them to be cheesy most of the time as the only real way to get the audience to jump in their seats.

I don't think most people are fans of stingers used to startle the audience, but it is a tool that can be powerful in skilled hands (as in Cat People's tension relief, the stabbing sound in Psycho, or in Mulholland Drive where the sound sustains instead of punctuating)

It's been a long while since I listened to a movie, live or animated that had somewhat of a decent sound effects going for it.

There are some sound effects that can enhance the movie but there are some that kind of get on my nerves. It depends what the sound effect is.

Oh, I agree with you completely. They can be so cheesy. But there are films out there that can do it right. Especially when it comes to music. It's the music that really manipulates the audience. The sound effects are just background noise that I don't care for.
